Dental Crown Procedure in Cincinnati, OH

When you need dental work done, Blue Ash Dental Group is the place to go. One of the services that we offer is dental crowns in Cincinnati, OH. If you want to learn more about crowns, you’ve come to the right place!

What Is A Dental Crown?

Crowns are basically a professionally crafted cap that we put on top of your tooth. These caps can last for years. But when do you actually need this procedure? Some reasons to get a crown include:

  • To maintain a tooth’s strength: After a large filling or a root canal, your tooth may lack the structural integrity that it needs. A crown is a great way to protect your teeth. If you have a cavity or need a root canal, we will discuss with you the need for a crown if it’s necessary.

  • To maintain a tooth’s appearance: If your tooth or teeth don’t look how you want them to, a crown can fix that. Crowns can fix gaps between teeth, worn down teeth, broken teeth, and even discoloration.

  • To top off a dental implant: Dental implants are a great method of tooth replacement, so if you choose implants, you’ll need a crown on top so that the implant looks and functions like a normal tooth.

Crowns can be made of various types of materials. They can be made of porcelain that is fused to a metal base, zirconia, gold, silver, and others. We use solid blocks of zirconia as that is the strongest material available for crowns.

What Should I Expect During the Dental Crown Procedure?

First, the dentist will remove the decayed or broken portion of your tooth structure. Some people require a root canal treatment before getting a crown, depending on the extent of the cavity. During this part of the restoration process, the dentist clears the pulp within the tooth of infection to prevent future health problems.

After preparing the affected tooth, the dentist files down the outer layer to create a base for the permanent crown. This is what is commonly called a core buildup. Next, the team makes an impression of the trimmed tooth and the surrounding teeth so that the new crown will match your natural smile.

Getting dental crowns in Cincinnati usually takes two visits since we send the impression to a lab for fabrication of the permanent porcelain crown. At the end of the first visit, the dentist places a temporary crown over the prepared tooth to shield it from damage.

After a few weeks, we receive the permanent crown from the lab. When you return for your second visit, we remove the temporary crown and cement the new permanent crown to your tooth. Zirconia crowns function just like your natural teeth.

How Do I Care for My New Crown?

Since we use temporary adhesive for the temporary crown, use caution when you brush, floss, and eat. Call us right away for a replacement if this crown falls out before you receive your permanent crown.

With your permanent zirconia replacement tooth, proper care can prolong its life and prevent further decay or damage. You should:

  • Brush and floss your teeth carefully at least twice a day or after every meal. If you experience heat or cold sensitivity around your crown, look for a toothpaste specifically for sensitive teeth. Call us immediately if the sensitivity is too much to handle.

  • If recommended by the dentist, wear a nightguard if you tend to clench or grind your teeth at night.

Historically, the average life of a crown (based on statistics from the dental industry) is about five to 15 years. Monolithic crowns made from a solid material such as zirconia tend to have the longest life, followed by crowns made from gold or porcelain fused to metal. We no longer use porcelain crowns in our office. Instead, we use crowns milled from a solid block of zirconia. As the use of zirconia crowns becomes more popular, we will likely see the statistics change to reflect crowns lasting much longer as zirconia is a much stronger material than porcelain.

You may notice some sensitivity or discomfort, especially in the first few weeks after the procedure, but complications associated with dental crowns are rare. Still, the dentist can repair small chips or cracks that affect the crown, or cement it in place again if it becomes loose. If left untreated, these issues can cause bacteria to collect under the crown and affect the remaining portion of your natural tooth. So, call your dentist at the first sign of dental crown issues.
